Dear Ask The Doctor: I have a underactive thyroid and i am suffering from hair loss, i seem to be losing more that is normal, my hair has also become very fine, could there be another cause to this ?
Dear TINA: There are a wide range of conditions that can bring on hair loss, with some of the most common being pregnancy, thyroid disorders, and anemia. Others include autoimmune diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and skin conditions such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. Extreme stress; physical trauma like surgery or intense illness; dramatic weight loss over a short period of time can also lead to hair loss in women. It is most likely that your hair loss is due to your hypothyroidism however it is important to see a dermatologist to rule out other causes. |
