Bleeding in stool and vomiting blood

Dear Ask The Doctor: My boyfriend is bleeding very bad in his stool and vomiting blood. What could case it?

Dear Kayla: Your boyfriend is suffering from an acute gastrointestinal bleed. This is a potential life threatening emergency and I would advise your to take him to the emergency. The most probable cause would have been a variceal bleed as you've mentioned about his liver cirrhosis. Other causes are a peptic ulcer bleed, erosive gastritis or erosive esophagitis. Your boyfriend needs to be immediately hospitalized and an upper GI endoscopy to the detect the site of bleed. He may also require a blood transfusion if there is a large amount of blood lost. I hope the information helps.
