Is it Safe to Take Gastro Resistant Aspirin if I had an Ulcer over 10 Years ago?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Can i take gastro resistant aspirin even though i had a stomach ulcer caused by helicobactor pylori over ten years ago

Dear Sharon: In general, you should try to avoid aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) if you have had stomach ulcers, even though it was years ago. It is safer to use anotther drug in its place if possible to prevent any chance of bleeding or ulcers yet again with aspirin. If you must take such medicines, you should talk to your doctor before taking the drug, as they may recommend that you take proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), an acid blocker or may be misoprostol, a drug used for the prevention of NSAIDs induced stomach ulcers.
