Throat and mouth ulcers after Loose motions and Vomiting.

Dear Ask The Doctor: My sister had fever with shivering ,loose motions and vomiting after which she was admitted and was on drip .now she has ulcers in her mouth and throat probably because of vomiting(without food) and heavy antibiotics.is it something to worry about? how much time wil she take to recover?

Dear Taru: I do understand that you are concerned for your sister. The condition that you have described could most probably due to an apthous ulcer. The cause of these ulcers are not known but they usually appear during times of stress, infection, allergies, immune reaction and due do deficiency in vitamin B12 and folates. These ulcers are nothing to worry about and usually resolve after the underlying infection is treated. Application of an anesthetic ointment will relieve the pain.
