Vagina burning sensation and Discharge

Dear Ask The Doctor: I'm a teenager and never had a sexual intercourse with anyone. My vagina feels slightly burning and it's very uncomfortable. It all started when my vaginal discharge heavily flows out. It doesn't hurt when I pee and my vaginal discharge doesn't have a bad smell. I wipe my vagina every time after I pee. What should I do? Is it really bad?

Dear Sya: Excessive vaginal discharge and burning senssation could indicate vaginal candidiasis (common yeast infection) or bacterial vaginosis (an overgrowth of normal vaginal bacteria). I suggest that you schedule an appointment with your OBGYN. He or she can take a more detailed history of your symptoms and perform a thorough pelvic exam. A sample of your discharge should be analyzed under a microscope to look for evidence of any of these infections. Treatment will depend on the cause. I would also advise the following precautions : Wear cotton panties instead of synthetic fabrics to allow for air flow. Use proper hygiene, always wiping front to back to avoid introducing bacteria from the rectum into the vaginal area. Do not use products such as vaginal sprays or douches that interfere with the vagina's pH level and good bacteria.
