Adults and children from three years and the rotavirus.

Dear Ask The Doctor: Can Adults and children betwein 3 years and 10 years get the rotavirus vaccine? We are 5 people in the house and we keep on infecting each other with the rotavirus, as one gets better the other one gets sick. we constantly disinfect the house since this virus made its way into our home, but it does not seem to help. what can we do? please this is urgent can you help?

Dear Alono: Rota virus diarrhoea is the leading cause of gastroenteritis in children and children between the age groups of 6 months of 2 years of age are affected most, thus vaccination is recommended at 2 , 4 and 6 months of age and vaccination given after this age has no added adnvantage as by the age of 5 years almost every child is infected with it and then local intestinal immunity plays important role in controlling the severity of the disease. As main route of transmission of the disease is faeco-oral, maintaining good hygeine during handling and preparing and eating food could be useful in controlling the transmission of the disease.
