Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, I have been feeling this pain on the left side of my epigastric region (the bottom of my rib cage) for a few days now. It wasn't always there but now it isn't going away. It hurts a little like when one runs for a while and feels cramps in their gut but the pain is higher up. The pain increases just a little when I breath but is more painful when i actually touch the area. I havent been eating as much lately but that isnt because of the pain I do look more pale since a couple of weeks ago and the color of my skin under my eyes is a bit darker. I have been going to the restroom more often than normal. It should be noted that I do smoke cigarettes I am a 24 caucasian male. 5'5" I dont know my weight but its normally 130lb although I am sure I have lost weight in the last few weeks, I'm guessing because I have not eaten as much as I normally do. Also, my sleeping schedule has always been a little rough but now I only sleep about 2 hours every night because when I wake up, I no longer feel tired whatsoever. I have quit smoking herbal incense yesterday because I am pretty sure it is the reason for my lack of sleep among other things but I would like to hear a doctor's opinion on my matter to see if I should be worried about the pain I feel.
Dear Ahmed: Pain in the upper abdomen can be caused by a number of problems. Conditions that cause inflammation of the digestive organs, such as gastritis and pancreatitis, gallstones, reflux disease, chest infection, heart attack or angina may all present with upper abdominal pain.
If your pain persists even after taking antacids or PPI (nexazole), you need to consult your doctor to rule out the above mentioned possibilities. A complete blood count, liver function test, an ultrasound abdomen ,serum lipase and an endoscopy may help in the diagnosis. |
