Dear Ask The Doctor: I experience pain when I press down on the first knuckle of my index finger facing the palm, on the side of the knuckle adjacent to the thumb. It does not hurt when I flex the finger only when the area is pressed. There appears to my some minor swelling, possibly fluid when it is aggravated. It feels like there is a tendon at this point. What could be causing this? and what could I try to fix it?
Dear Jason: It is possible that at some point you stressed the hand and now you are having a tenosynovitis. Conservative treatment includes: rest (you need healing time), ice, stretching and strengthening exercises, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meds (“motrin”, “aleve”). |
