Dear Ask The Doctor: I have really bad wrist in my right wrist. My wife and I were haveing sex on the floor in the missionary position.I was hold all my weight up on my wrists and arms on top. I did not feel anything sanp or pull whill holding myself up, but, afterwards, when we were, and I let myself down and took the weight off my wrist, it really hurt. It still hurts and that was 3 weeks ago. When I turn my wrist to left or left to right like when turning a door knob, I feel something loose that kind of "flips" a little. I have full use and motion rangeof my wrist. It hurts if I push anything into my right pocket or if I stretch my arm like when I wake up. If I have torn or damaged a ligament, what would the treatment be? Will it hear eventually? It felt betterwhen I imobolized it with a wrist brace.
Dear Hal: First of all, if you see a deformity in your wrist along with the pain, swelling and limitation for the normal movements I recommend you to go to the hospital and get X rays done to rule out a possible wrist/hand fracture or dislocation produced when you put all your weight on the wrist. If the x-rays or other imaging study (CT or MRI) do not show any fracture of hand or wrist, then you can think about a post traumatic Tenosynovitis or wrist sprain. The healing time varies from patient to patient, but generally requires Protection (splinting and avoidance of painful movements and activities), Rest, Ice the first 24 hours and then local heat (hot moist compresses or paraffin baths), anti-inflammatory medication (i.e.: “Aleve”) so you can come back progressively to your daily routine in about 4-6 weeks. It is recommended that you keep using the wrist brace and avoid movements and activities that put additional stress on the wrist. |
