Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 48 yr old woman that is experiencing pain in my lower left side that isn't sharp, just there. It doesn't change when I move or cough but does get better when I urinate. I have had a C-sect and a hysterectomy so I am wondering if I might have scar tissue in that area. When I have a colonoscopy, I have a GREAT amount of pain in that area and the doctor has told me he can't give me enough anesthesia to block that out. I have been diagnosed with IBS for many years but the pain is different and not affected by bowel movements.
Dear Karen: Adhesions are strands of scar tissue that form in response to abdominal surgery. Symptoms caused by abdominal adhesions may vary from mild cramp like pain to intestinal obstruction. The pain you are experiencing could certainly be cause by pelvic adhesions after hysterectomy but it is required that your doctor first rule out other causes of abdominal pain. |
