Dear Ask The Doctor: The second toe on my left foot is the same size as my big toe. And by the same size, the toes are the same width and length (the second may be a bit longer, but that is not relevant here). The toe is not only unsightly; it has also affected the shape and development of the third toe and it uncomfortable in any shoe. It actually sits above the toes because the depth of the toe protrudes the toe upward. Are there any surgical remedies for this condition?
Dear Eli: The problem you have described requires evaluation and possible surgical correction by an orthopaedic surgeon or podiatrist. If it is not possible to correct the problem then your doctor will refer you for orthotics. These will be custom-made shoes to accommodate the unique shape of your foot. |
