Severe neck pain after Spinal Fusion Surgery.

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have experienced severe pain in my neck since cerv. spine fusion surgery. I have reduced ROM and also experience spasms in the muscles on both sides of my neck down onto my shoulders. When I yawn, my neck usually spasms so badly that I cannot open my mouth for a period of time (usually just a matter of seconds). My question: What, if anything, can be done?
Dear Fred: It is crucial that after the spine surgery you complete a comprehensive Rehabilitation program to avoid precisely those complications that you mentioned above. I recommend that you talk to your doctor and explore the possibility of referring you to a Rehabilitation facility in order to stretch and strengthen your neck muscles, improve your cervical range of movements and also to control pain. |
