Severe Lower Right Abdominal Pain |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My friend has lower right abdominal pain kind of located distal to the midline (half a finger length from his love handle towards the midline and about belly button height). He has been checked 4 times and was told it was muscles. However, when he has gas it is extremely painful and I gently tapped him with the back of my hand yesterday and he almost keeled over in pain. This seems very dangerous and not normal. He is in great shape and there is no bruising to indicate a muscular problem. Any suggestions? Dear AM: The symptoms that you have described of lower right abdominal pain, suggest that your friend is probably suffering from acute appendicitis. Acute appendicitis may presents with lower abdominal pain which begins in the umbilical region then later located to the right lower abdomen. There may be vomiting, fever and nausea. It is caused due to inflammation of the appendix. Though appendicites is clinically diagnosed, your friend will need to go to the hospital for blood tests and ultrasound abdomen to rule out other causes like kidney stones or obstruction of the intestines. |
