Dear Ask The Doctor: I am going on my third day of having sharp pain in my upper right abdominal wall that is worse when taking a deep breath. I was constipated for five days and had a bowel movement last night after taking laxatives and felt better...but the pain came back in the night. What could this be?? I have no insurance and cannot afford a doctor. Please answer just as soon as you can and any tips on how to get rid of the pain are greatly appreciated.
Dear Brooke: You have mentioned that you are having a sharp pain in the upper right abdomen, this type of pain is commonly seen in a biliary colic. The gallbladder stores digestive enzymes that are released into the intestines during digestion. Sometimes there is development of stones in the gallbladder that obstruct the flow of bile and causes symptoms of pain. This is very common in females and in obese individuals. I would advise that you get an ultrasound done to rule out stone formation. |
