Foot pain, which worsens on standing for long period of time. |

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi i have a pain in my right foot, by the arch to the start of the heel, it becomes quite sore the longer i stand on it. Its been this way for nearly 5days now, It just came on me Friday afternoon n is there since, do u know wot it might be? Dear Louise: You are most probably suffering from plantar fasciitis which is due to the overuse injury of the heel with associated micro-tears in the plantar fascia. Plantar fasciitis is caused by prolonged standing, walking, running and also walking on unstable surfaces. There may also be contributing factors such as high or low foot arch, obesity and poorly fitted shoes which worsens the pain. Treatment of plantar fasciitis include i) rest, ice, compression and elevation of the affected foot. ii) Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs including aspirin for short-term pain management. iii) Exercises like picking a piece of cloth/paper with your toes and rolling a bottle under your feet. The condition is self limiting and usually resolves on its own. It the pain is not resolved with these measures then you may need to consult your doctor for further evaluation. |
