Dear Ask The Doctor:I cut my foot open 5 years ago just near my achilles tendon. Not through my tendon but just muscle. This required 5 stiches. I have had no problems with this until now. I am currently walking 20 miles everyday for a charity and have done so for 6 weeks and need to do so for another 6 weeks. But now every morning my achilles is very sore and i can hardly even walk for the first hour until it warms up. Then i can walk ok for the day. What has happened here? Could this be permanent if i do not stop? Thanks
Dear Mick:You are suffering from achilles tendonitis, an inflammation of the achilles tendon. This is most probably due to the stress on the tendon by the long walks that you are taking everyday. Improper shoes may also aggravate the condition.
I would advise a complete rest in your case. Applying an ice pack to the affected foot, anti-inflammatory medication and compression bandage will help. If these measures don't help, you will have to see your doctor who may advice and x-ray, ultrasound or MRI of the affected foot to confirm the diagnosis. |
