Dear Ask The Doctor: I have swelling on the left side of my body, especially my thigh and knee area. I often have bruises that pop up on them and seldom have edemia. I've been to the doctor several times but they can not provide a answer to my issue. Can you give me suggestions or at least tell me what type of specialist who can help me. My leg often fall asleep while sitting, walking or laying down.
Dear Regina: A unilateral swelling of the lower extremities can be caused by cellulitis, deep venous thrombosis, ankle bursitis, achilles tendinitis and thrombophlebitis. The treatment depend on the underlying cause of the swelling. You may try rest, elevation of the foot, stockings to see it these measures reduce the swelling. |
