Dear Ask The Doctor: My belly button is leaking a strange, clear liquid. I dried it out and cleaned it with a q tip and it appeared to be dry. Only a few minutes later, it was full of this clear liquid again. It doesn't smell particularly bad, just the typical belly button funk. What is this and what should I do? Dear Cassie: Discharge of clear fluid form the umbilicus could be due to an abscess, umbilical cyst, umbilical hernia or a vitelline duct remnant. I would suggest that you see your doctor. Culture of the discharge and an umbilical ultrasound will help to determine the cause. |
