Dear Ask The Doctor: I had an ankle fusion 6yrs ago. I now have an infection around the site of one implanted screws. I went to the ER and was given Cephalexin. The ER Dr never made the connection with the implant. Is it possible to get an infection 6 yrs on?
Dear Greg: If the infection is just affecting the superficial layers of the skin possibly is caused by skin bacteria and with the antibiotic prescribed will be treated. But, if it is a deep infection coming from the bone (osteomyelitis) then this can lead to removal of the implant and take more aggressive actions. |
