Dear Ask The Doctor: Dear Doctor, I am from India and I really appreciate the good work that you are doing. Coming straight to the point, I had received a 3 shot anti-rabies vaccine last year in August i.e. 2011 August. At that time, when I took the injections, I used to feel very slightly dizzy for a few hours after taking the injections. It was never strong enough to effect my working in any way and subsided within a few hours. Now it has been almost 6 months and I am perfectly fine. I have not had any problems whatsoever. Just wanted to know if it was normal and that I do not have to worry about it now. Just a "you are good" will do..:-) Thanks and regards,
Dear VK: I would like to assure you that you have nothing to worry about. Rabies vaccine contains inactivated rabies virus. It works by provoking the body's immune response to this virus, without actually causing the disease. A vaccine, like any medicine, has certain side-effects. Serious problems from rabies vaccine are very rare. Mild problems include soreness, redness, swelling, or itching where the shot was given and headache, nausea, abdominal pain, muscle aches, dizziness - which occurs in 10 - 40% cases. |
