Boil with pus drainage

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had a large boil that is now open and is still draining with pus and blood.. it left a large hole and around it is swelled, red and hard.. what should i do

Dear Helen: I would suggest that you try draining the pus and apply topical mupirocin ointment. If the swelling does not subside, you may require systemic antibiotics or incision and drainage if there is a pus collection. The pus material should be sent for culture and susceptibility testing.
