Frequently occuring abscesses |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: About a year and a half ago, I had to have an abcess removed from my bikini line. Not too long after that I had another abcess under my arm, and in my ear simultaneously. Several months later, it was in my rt. eye. Then again, and worse.my eye was so swollen I couldn't see out of it. That was 2 months ago. Since then, I had it again in my ear, and now in both my eyes. I know that there is a larger reason why I keep getting these infections. But,I live in a country with social healthcare, so it's very difficult to get a straight answer about anything. Since I have to specifically request certain screenings,Will you please tell me what conditions could cause these frequent infections? Dear Allison: Boils or skin abscess are warm, painful, pus-filled pockets of infection below the skin surface that may occur on any body skin surface. Abscesses may be one to several inches in diameter. The most important cause for recurrence is re-infection with the same bacteria due to poor hygiene. Sometimes we forget to wash our hands and the bacteria can be transported in the hands and infect other parts of our body. Certainly, People who have recurrent skin abscesses need to wash their skin with liquid soap that contains special antiseptics, or they can take antibiotics for 1 to 2 months. A weakened immune system, obesity, old age, and possibly diabetes are also common risk factors. Some people may have recurring episodes of infection for unknown reasons. I hope I cleared your doubt. |
