Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi i have a wound that has tracked in my neck following removal of a lymph node in june 2010. After surgery I developed a haematoma and the wound subsequently dehisced, I have been seeing a member of my cosultant's team for the past 4 months for review but the wound still remains open and is approx 0.5cm deep, there has been no change in the past 6 weeks and the wound is now infected. The nurse at the clinic wanted a second opinion so the consultant saw me on mon and suggested that he needed to reoperate and close the wound, do you have any idea what the operation will involve or if I will have a bigger scar? Thank you for yr help
Dear Claire: The operation will likely involve removal of any dead or infected tissue followed by closure of the wound with non-absorbable sutures. You will also be prescribed a course of antibiotics after surgery. Given that the wound is only 0.5 cm deep you should not have a big scar but the eventual scar will be determine by the amount of tissue that has to be removed at the time of surgery. |
