MRSA Is this the end of my professional life and family life? |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I was diagnosed with MRSA I have been reading many patient accounts and I am beginning to believe there is no hope for me. Can you please clarify for me? I have little faith in my country's healthcare. Is this a condition that I must live with or is there a way to rid myself of it permanently? I am 46 years old, in excellent shape, and a field medic. If I can't rid myself of this then I need to end my career and stay away from my 14 year old daughter who also has Ulcerative Colitis. Dear Shannan: I understand you worry but let me reassure you that having MRSA does not mean that you don’t have a chance. This is just a strain of Staph bacteria that's become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections. Probably due to your chronic conditions and different antibiotic treatments and close contact with hospitals you might have probably acquired these bacteria. These bacteria would respond only to certain limited antibiotics and certainly your doctors are aware of, but you will have to be very careful and try not to have wounds that might become infected with this entity. You will need to pay special attention in your hygiene from now on; I would suggest you to wash your hands constantly change your linen more frequently and keep your personal items personal. This would help you avoid re infections and also transmission to your close relatives. I would also like to suggest you to talk to your doctor about the site of your current infection and special measures that he might suggest. I wish you a prompt recovery. |
