Osteomyelitis of the Calcaneus

Dear Ask The Doctor: I fractured my calcaneus bone in June. Had surgery in early July to put plate and screws in. Early August had a Staph infection and 2 clean out procedures done. In mid Sept, I had the plate and pins removed. End of Sept had another infection, 2 more procedures to clean the area out. Since then I have been on antibiotics (Zosyn) through a PICC line. This ended just the other day. I am still non-weight bearing(bone soft). The most recent MRI still showed some infection in the bone but huge improvement. I can't seem to get an answer from my doctor but if the infection is still there (Osteomyelitis) after all this time doesn't it likely mean another course of action will be required (ie bone graft, etc)?
Dear Jeff: Osteomyelitis is always a very difficult infection to treat and usually takes a very long time to resolve. While there is a possibility that further surgical intervention may be required, this is not always the case. Your surgeon will determine your progress and will chose the least invasive yet effective treatment. You seem to be recovering well and as such there is no indication that the present course of treatment needs to be changed. |
