Chronic abcess on breasts |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I have what seems to be a chronic abcess time thing on the inner parts of both my breasts. Im not exact sure if it is an abcess. They become painful at first then swell up to a head filled with pus and blood. when they pop they go away and heal but a couple of days later they come back. Sometimes they dont heal right away and leave a red raw open sore before healing. I notice the skin on my breasts around the abcess is very hard. Ive tried heat as well as medicine such as bactrim to kill the bacteria. Nothing has helped. What is wrong with me ? Dear Pauline: A boil or abscess is a localized infection deep in the skin that starts as a reddened, tender area. Over time, the area becomes firm, hard, and tender. Eventually, the center of the boil softens and becomes filled with infection-fighting white blood cells from the bloodstream to eradicate the infection. This collection of white blood cells, bacteria, and proteins is known as pus. Finally, the pus "forms a head," which can be surgically opened or spontaneously drain out through the surface of the skin. Abscess that don’t remit for a long period of time should be drained by a physician and antibiotics might need to be prescribed especially if no drainage occurs, common associated with diabetes or other immune suppressant conditions should be also screened. In the meant time keep applying warm compresses to try drain all the pus inside the abscess and apply an antibiotic ointment. Like I said before, oral antibiotics and complete drainage would be needed. I wish you a prompt recovery.
