Tampon and Toxic Shock Syndrome |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: In my stupidity, I realized that I had left a tampon in for 2 days. I am aware of the risks of TSS, but do not exhibit any of the warning signs on the insert that is included with them. Should I be concerned or do the symptoms not typically show right away ? Please respond... Thank U
Dear Amy: Thank you for your question. Toxic Shock syndrome is a disease of sudden onset and is characterised by very high fever (39-40 C) , vomitting/diarrhea, generalised muscle weakness, confusion, low blood pressure and eventually a skin rash. It is caused due to the toxin which is released by the bacteria. Since it is caused by a toxin the symptoms would generally develop sooner than later.Since you left your tampon in for 2 days you are at a higher risk of developing TSS. I advice you to keep on a look out for the above mentioned symtoms and consult your family physician if they develop. |
