Do I have a VP shunt infection?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I had a VP shunt revision done last Friday, they ended up replacing the valve. The following day I started leaking CSF fluid through my incision in copious amounts. I had to go back to surgery and they found that the valve had came disconnected from the tubing. At this time there is redness along the staples and further down along the tubing. I have no fever but it feels very similar to the last time I had a shunt infection. Is it possible that I can have an infection in my shunt without a fever? Thanks for your time.
Dear Amy: The symptoms you have described are early signs of an infection. It is possible that you are developing a shunt infection and simply have not yet developed a fever. You should have your neurosurgeon assess the shunt as soon as possible so that any potential complication can be averted. |
