Multiple swollen lymph nodes

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello and thanks in advance. I am a 27 year old male. In 2007, I experienced a swollen lymph node on the right side of my groin. This particular lymph node swelling was accompanied by moderate-to-slightly severe pain in the surrounding area, and the pain was actually significant enough to affect my ability to walk normally. I saw a pathologist, who decided it was necessary to surgically remove the swollen node, and the finding was that the node was benign. Anyway's, it is now almost four years later, and I believe I have two swollen inguinal nodes on my left side. I have not undergone any injury in the past several months, nor have I experienced anything I can relate to this occurence. It is worth adding that there is some slight discomfort resulting from the swollen nodes, but the pain this time is not nearly as strong as it was in the prior node swelling in 2007. Oh, additional important information: each node that is swollen is swollen well beyond one centimeter.
Dear Tim:Lymph node enlargement and tenderness can occur due to various reasons. A local infection draining into those lymph nodes is a common scenario. Other reasons include a cancer, benign enlargement etc. You need to keep a check on the lymph nodes for now and monitor them for any change ie increase in size, character or pain. Also evaluate whether you may be having a uti or sti which both can drain into the local lymph nodes and cause enlargement and tendernes. In case it does not subside you will have to get a biopsy done to determine the exact cause. I hope this helps. |
