Dear Ask The Doctor: 6 yrs back I was diagnosed with tuberclosis in Lungs i.e water in lungs. I took medicines and within 6 months it got ok. Few days back, I had cough and cold and I went for my chest X-Ray. The report read "Fibro-calcified scarry shadow seen in the left upper zone with upward pulling of left hilum - old inflammatory." Now I want to know what does this exactly mean? Is it an indication of any risk? What type of precautions I have to take? Further there is another thing I want to know that because of whatever mentioned in the report, shall I stop learning swimming which I was doing since last 2 months?
That is most probably residual scarring from the tuberculosis or from any other lung infection. Since you already underwent treatment, there is no need to worry. TB usually affects the upper part of of lungs because it needs oxygen; the upper lungs have more oxygenated areas compared to the lower part. This xray finding is not uncommon for those who have had history of tuberculosis. There is no reason for you to discontinue swimming at all. In general, those who have had history of tuberculosis should maintain a healthy lifestyle because it is really hard to kill the bacteria. There is always a chance of it reactivating and/or causing damage to virtually any organ of the body. Any immunocompromised state can activate tuberculosis. Eating and living healthy is a great way to prevent this from happening. I do hope I have answered your question and take care always. |
