Dear Ask The Doctor: 51 year old male. Generally good health. I ran a fever for about five hours late Friday and have felt crappy ever since: sore achy muscles, growling stomach (but no nausea or dysentery), tired. I had the flu shot already this season. So today I popped out in painful pimples or boils all over--mostly on my chest and stomach, maybe two dozen total. I feel bad but my temp is only .3 degrees above normal. What is this bug? I am unemployed and have no insurance. A trip to the doc would cost 85 plus whatever the prescription would run. Can I just tough it out? 85 is really more than I have left for the whole rest of the month for food and everything.
Dear Don: The symptoms that you have described suggest of a viral infection (most probably varicella zoster). The vesicles of herpes zoster are painful and are commonly seen of the chest and abdomen. The infection results from the reactivation of the varicella zoster (chicken pox) virus. It usually takes 3-4 weeks for full recovery. Treatment include oral and topical acyclovir. Pain is managed by taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) or analgesics containing codeine. I hope this information helps, take care. |
