My mother's alcohol consumption and weight gain

Dear Ask The Doctor: Dear Ask the Docor, Every parent drinks occasionally around their children and during the day. But I've noticed my mom starting to drink about 4 of her 'home made' margaritas a day after work. And she gets buzzed and sometimes drunk. Is this okay for her health? She's 45, and it's just concerning, plus, she's trying to loose weight but she's geting larger, is the alcohol reversing her diet? Sincerely, Shannon

Dear Shannon: Females should not exceed 2 drinks per day with a maximum of up to 9 drinks per week, each drink amounting to 13. 6 gms. Your mother needs to reduce the amount of alcohol in her margarita recipe or cut down the number of drinks to the recommendation as above else it may lead to health and other problems. Excessive intake of alcohol leads to weight gain, not solely because of its own calories, but also because of the calories they inspire you to consume later. Alcohol lowers your inhibition so you end up feeling like you can eat anything and everything you see. Lowering her alcohol intake would help control any weight changes and keep her healthy.
