When does a suture need to be removed?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello i had a coccygectomy 19 days ago. my doctor has now gone on holiday and said he would take my stitches out in another 10 days making it 4 weeks. is that not too long to have them in? i am worried about infection and pain when they remove them. they are very uncomfortable because of where they are situated and really worried. pls advise thank you kindly heidi

Dear Heidi: Sutures are divided into two categories, absorbable and nonabsorbable sutures. The absorbable sutures breakdown in the body and lose their strength within 60 days whereas the nonabsorbable sutures maintain their strength for longer than 60 days.

Depending of the sutures used and the site of the sutures, the removal time varies. Usually sutures on the trunk and body are removed after 7 to 10 days. You may have to consult with your doctor to find the reason for keeping the sutures longer.
