Bleeding post bowel movements

Dear Ask The Doctor: For the past couple months I have noticed some light bleeding from my anus. I say light and I really do mean light, like extremely light spotting on my toilet paper. My stool has never been red. I have had problems with constipation in the past but things have actually been running smoothly recently. I have felt that my anal area has been somewhat 'raw' recently, it can be pretty uncomfortable, and sometimes when I use the bathroom after feeling the light pain I notice tiny tiny amounts of blood on the toilet paper. Should I be worried?

Dear Taylor: The light blood and spotting visible on toilet paper after passing a bowel movement, may be due to the presence of haemorrhoids, secondary to constipation. Haemorrhoids are dilated and inflamed veins in the rectum and anus, they may be internal or external and from time to time they bleed. The best way to prevent haemorrhoids is to keep stools soft so they pass easily, thus decreasing pressure and straining, and to empty bowels as soon as possible after the urge occurs. Exercise, including walking, increased fluid intake, and increased fibre in the diet (such as fruits, vegetables and cereals high in fibre) help reduce constipation and straining by producing stools that are softer and easier to pass. I advise attending your family doctor for a full diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
