Dear Areej: Painful menstruation, also known as dysmenorrhea, is one of the most common gynecologic problems. Most women begin having dysmenorrhea during adolescence, usually within four to five years of the first menstrual period. Primary dysmenorrhea is when there is high levels of prostaglandins which cause stimulation and contraction of the uterine muscles. Secondary dysmenorrhea is cause due to an underlying condition. The most common causes are endometriosis, adenomyosis, ovarian cyst, uterine polyps and adhesion. This primary management of dysmenorrhea are Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and birth control pills. You can also try applying heat to the lower abdomen with a heating pad, hot water bottle, or self-heating patch can significantly reduce pain. If neither NSAIDs nor a hormonal birth control treatment adequately improve pain, the next step would be to see your doctor for a complete physical examination and tests. |
