Dear Ask The Doctor: I went to the dr 6-7-2011 my blood pressure was 167-170 I havent had high blood pressure before and had no symtoms. what would cause my blood pressure to be so high Dear Connie: Risk factors that may induce high blood pressure include sedentary lifestyle, stress, increased alcohol intake, smoking, overweight or obesity etc. However, hypertension may only be diagnosed on obtaining consistent high readings at 3 or more different occasions. Occasional rise in blood pressure may occur, if the reading was taken as soon as you entered your doctor’s office or the very thought or presence in a doctor’s office may raise blood pressure in some individuals (white collar hypertension). Emotional changes and physical stress could also bring about changes in blood pressure.
