Dear Ask The Doctor: WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND A PERSON TO TAKE WHEN THEY ARE ON DIALYSIS AND LOSS THEIR APPETITE. MY DAUGHTER NEEDS SOMETHING TO HELP STIMULATE HER APPETITE. SHE ALSO HAS LUPUS AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND SHE'S ONLY 29 YEARS OLD. PLEASE HELP.
Dear PAMELA:There are several drugs available that stimulate the appetite. These may include tricyclic antidepressants, megestrol, cyproheptadine, or sometimes a short course of steroids may enhance the appetite. I would advise discussing these options with your daughter’s supervising consultant because not all of these options may be appropriate, if your daughter has dialysis dependant renal failure. |
