Drug elimination during renal dialysis

Dear Ask The Doctor: I was wondering when you go thru dialysis does the dialysis remove all the medicne in your systems as it cleans your blood and if so what if you were addicted to pain killers and went to dialysis would it send you into withdrawals immediately
Dear Pam:The distribution of a drug may be altered in renal disease due to pH-dependent protein binding and reduced protein levels. Renal disease may affect liver as well as renal drug metabolism; the exact mechanisms for these changes are not well understood. The type of renal disease may affect drug filtration and excretion differently. Drug removal by dialysis is dependent on a number of factors, including the characteristics of a particular drug and the type of dialysis and equipment used. Therefore this is impossible to predict without knowledge of the particular drug, or the type, duration and frequency of dialysis used. |
