Overdose on Beta Blockers |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi there, my sister has overdosed on her Metroprolol (i think thats how u spell it) beta blocker. they are 190 mg tablets she has taken a months worth, do i need to do anything? Will she be okay does this type of beta blocker have a bad effect when overdosed? she wont die will she??? Thanks Dear Chantelle: Overdose of any and all prescription medications require immediate assessment at the ER. The effects of the medication can be reduced depending on how the medication is metabolized by the body. Options include observation, gastric lavage, IV fluids, binding agents, diuretics and dialysis. The method used depends on the medication pharmacokinetics and how soon the patient was seen in the ER. Furthermore, all medications have side effects, these side effects have to be monitored for and managed as they arise. Monitoring is usually done on a continuous basis and for a minimum of 24 hours and often longer. |
