Side effects of Antidepressants and Antipyschotics |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression. My doctor put me on Celexa 10mg, but developed involuntary muscle movement in 9 days. My neck, chest, stomach, arms, and legs move shake separately or together. Very Scary. Now he took me off that medication and put me on Seroquel 75mg per day. The warning label for Seroquel says, it too may cause involuntary muscle movement. I am worried that this medication may worsen my situation and make it permanent. Please, help. Thank you. Kibra Dear Kibra: I understand your concern and worry and hope that my answer here helps you. Celexa ( the medication which you were on earlier) belongs to the class of Selective serotonin receptor inhibitors which helps treat depression by blocking certain serotonin receptors. The side effects that you mentioned is called acute dystonia and extrapyramidal side effects which is common with this drug. Seroquel the next drug which your doctor prescribed is a atypical antipyschotic medication which acts in the same way by acting on serotonin receptors .However while they can lead to acute dystonia and extrapyramidal side effects it is to a much lower extent and very rare. Thus your doctor has started you on this medication. Moreover it is also improtant to know that these side effects are not permanent and stop once the medication is stopped and the antidote ( benztropine or lorazepam ) is given. In case you get the symptoms again you will need to change to another antidepressant like Effexor which does not cause these symptoms. I wish you all the best. |
