How to Minimize Withdrawal Symptoms on Drugs with High Abuse Potential

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have taking prescription soma for a long period of time and have built an immense tolerence. I would like to quit taking thses, I am staying at home to do it. I have given my presciption to a friend to hold for me. What is the best amount to take each day each hour to wean myself of these as easily as possible. Going to a doctor or a patient center is not impossible.
It would have been very helpful to me if you also mentioned the dose of Soma you have been using and the reason why you are taking them. These are very important to know. Anyway, in general, when one develops tolerance to a drug w/ abuse potential, gradual tapering of the dose is helpful to minimize withdrawal symptoms. Stopping the drug all at once will make it harder for you to wean off it and might make you crave for more. If you have been taking it 4x a day, try taking it 3x a day for 1 week; if you are tolerating this taper it down to 2x a day for another week then perhaps half the dose 2x a day x 1 week and so on and so forth. I commend you for realizing that you already have tolerance to the drug and doing something about it (giving the prescription to a friend so you will not have easy access). You may also want to consult the doctor who prescribed you these meds before doing anything. Maybe another drug with lesser potential for tolerance and dependence can be prescribed for your condition. I do hope this will help. Take care always. |
