Can Cephalexin and Clarithromycin be Taken Together?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am quite ill but must work or starve. The doctor put me on cephalexin and clarithromycin but now Im not sure if he meant to take both together. Im embarrassed to admit i was not smart enough to ask but I thought I would get some type of instructions from the pharmacist. Also i was too sick to think straight. can people take these 2 together? Is it OK I would appreciate a quick answer if you can as I have to get on a fish boat in a few days and go way out...... I did tell him the reality was that I had to make sure I would be OK once on the boat as it is going to very remote areas where there is no access to medical care maybe thats why he gave me two types? He is a visiting doctor as well (filling in ) and is gone now please help Im a bit concerned Anne

It would have been very helpful if I knew what your diagnosis was because too sick is too broad for me. But like you said, you haven’t been thinking straight. To answer your question, yes, Cefalexin and Clarithromycin may be taken together as they do not interact w/ each other; neither of them interacts w/ Digoxin too. Both are antibiotics but of different categories. Also, try to have lots of fluids and eat more vegetables and fruits to boost your immune system so you may recover faster. I do hope you get well soon. Enjoy your trip.
