Serotonin syndrome due to prozac?

Dear Ask The Doctor: This is a timeline of what happened. 1. got wisdom teeth out, was given Valium and Ativan before and tylenol 3(codine) after for pain. 2. Was in severe pain, went to the hospital, received a shot of Percocet 3.Had a sudden shift in mood, became suicidal. 4. Was admitted to the psych ward, hallucinating, nausea, night sweats. (was on a liquid diet due to previous surgery). 5. I have almost no memory of from the time I left the dentist to the first night in the ward. 6. the next two days in the ward my mood was back to normal, I was released on the third day in there. Now I'm home and still feeling nauseous, dizzy, headaches. I assume what I had was serotonin syndrome but Its only a guess. Any guidance on what this was and what I should do now? Also go a CT Scan today and now I am just waiting on those results.

Dear Preston: Serotonin Syndrome occurs when an selective serotonin uptake inhibitor is administered to a patient or on increasng the dose of a ssri. You were started on Prozac which is an SSRI. Symptoms of serotnonin syndrome generally are life threatning and include. nausea, diarrhea, palpitations, confusion and lethargy. While your symptoms are similar they dont seem to be as aggresive and thus i would advice you to keep a watch on the same. However if they worsen or prolong please consult a physician in person immediately as you may need to stop the medication. All the best.
