Terbinafine and nausea: Can it mean liver damage?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Terbinafine generic for Lamisil. I just got a toenail fungus and my doctor perscribed me this medication. I took it for 3 days and began to feel nauseous. When I called the office, they said to hold off taking the medication for 3 to 4 days and then try again. My consultation with the Doctor before starting this medication indicated that this drug can affect the liver. Before I resume, I inquired with the Doctor to see if I should take a blood test to make sure my liver has not been affected before resuming the drug. The office said it should not be necessary and I should stick with my currently scheduled blood test in June. Just wanted a second opinion. Thank you
Dear A.: Terbinafine can lead to nausea as well as vomitting as a side effect. It is highly unlikely that it has damage your liver. I agree with your physicians plan of continuing with the medication and scheduling your blood test in June. I hope this helps. |
