Dear Ask The Doctor: How long do benzodiazapenes stay in your system
Dear Jason: Benzodiazepines are classified in terms of its half life (time it takes for the body to eliminate half the dose). The short-acting benzodiazepines are Brotizolam, Midazolam and Triazolam. It stays in the body for about 1-12 hours. This category is also linked more to rebound anxiety and rebound insomnia. The intermediate-acting ones (alprazolam, estazolam, flunitrazepam, clonazepam, lormetazepam, lorazepam, nitrazepam, and temazepam) have a half-life of 12-40 hours. The half-life of long-acting benzodiazepines (diazepam, clorazepate, chlordiazepozide, and flurazepam) range from 40-250 hrs (roughly 10-11 days). Clearance of benzodiazepines from the body will also be affected by liver disease, and also if taken with other medications. So to answer your question, it will depend on the kind of benzodiazepine. I do hope this helps and take care always. |
