Methamphetamines and surgery, problems?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Could using methamphetamine the day before a surgery be life threatening? My girlfriend used some today and is getting a hysterectomy tomorrow morning and I'm worried about it.

Dear KEn: Methamphetamine have man y adverse effects on the body. A main effect of methamphetamine is its effect on the cardiovascular system which include an increase in heart rate, shortness of breath, increased blood pressure, sweating and increased body temperature. These effects can be detrimental during surgery!

It is extremely important that she informs her doctors of ALL drugs she uses. Most likely, her doctors will postpone her surgery since the effects of methamphetamine can last for more than 24 hrs.
