Dear Ask The Doctor: I'm taking Amoxicillin 500 capsules but because of a problem swallowing pills I have to chew them. They have no taste. Is this right. Every antibiotic I've taken had a bitter taste. The pills are for a cyst I had removed from my scalp. I am in good health. Thanks. jk
Dear John: It is advisable not to chew the Amoxicillin capsules. The capsule covering is specifically meant to deliver the content of the drug to the part of the intestines where they are absorbed the best. Chewing the capsules prevent the adequate delivery of the drug into the system and leads to inadequate treatment of the infection.
If you are not comfortable swallowing capsules, you may ask your doctor for an alternative soluble tablet form of amoxicillin which can be dissolved in a glass of water. |
