Dear Ask The Doctor: I was bitten by a brown recluse spider 1 year ago since then I have developed blood clots, clogged arteries on the same side as the bite. Also I have stomach ulcers and IBS, high blood pressure and severe depression with high anxitey amoung other health problems I never had prior to the bite which developed into cellulitus over my entie body. I would like to know if there is any connection between these problems and the bite?
Dear Margaret: Brown recluse spider bites is both cytotoxic and hemolytic and can cause significant cutaneous injury with tissue loss and necrosis. More serious reactions include systemic bleeding, Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), seizures and renal failure.
It is possible that the bite would have caused a disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) leading to formation of small blood clots inside the blood vessels throughout the body. However I would suggest that you consult your doctor because high blood pressure, IBS and anxiety may be unrelated to the spider bite. |
