Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 21 year old female living in Northern Ireland. I work in a fast food restaurant. For the past 6 weeks I have been suffering for what I believed to be a regualr cold. However, it is getting increasingly worse and new symptoms are appearing. My doctor sent me to A and E as he did not know what was wrong with me. The doctor there didn't know either but took a guess that it was perhaps a cold as well as a throat infection and an ear infectionand prescribed me a course of antibiotics. Whilst taking them my condition improved a lot. However, I finished the course a few days ago and it has come back worse than before. After talking to some people I work with and researching online I found that I share a lot of the symptoms with Avian Flu. I thought this condition had been wiped out. I'm starting to worry that this might actually be the cause but I also have other symptoms not associated with Avian Flu. My symptoms include:Extreme chesty cough, often causing me to wet myself due to its severity, producing a thick green mucus even though the doctor in A and E said my chest was clear, Runny nose, Headache, Muscle and joint pain, Loss of hearing, Pain in the ears, more severe in right ear, Partial numbness around the ears, Fever, Chills, Sweats (Night and Cold as well as regular), Nausea, Sore throat, with occasional itching, Swollen glands, Fatigue, Difficulty sleeping, Dry mouth and Pain in jaw. Whenever I try to get in to see my doctor I am told that they have a policy meaning that if you have cold or flu symptoms you are not to go to the surgery but instead go to the chemist and get some of the over-the-counter products available.I am really concerned about how long this has been going on and nothing is giving me relief. I have missed a lot of work due to this. Do you have any idea what could be wrong with me?
