Dear Ask The Doctor: 36 years old male (nonsmoker without known chronic diseases)used NSAID's often in some 2 week period cause tooth ache. (basically Ibuprofen, but also Paramax and Aspirin). Then he had some mild leg edema 2-3 days that eventually came larger pitting edema on lower legs, also he complained some dizziness and was very sensitive for sudden noises or movements. He also experienced black stools, shooing pain in fingers and in legs. So when we did read that it may be caused NSAID-s he did stop taking them and within few weeks he did lot better. We never considered renal failure. Downside is, that he had no medical insurance and this all happened almost 3 years ago. Now he does not experience any of those symptoms anymore unless he does start to take Ibuprofen again. Then mild leg edema almost always appears. Question: Is it possible that he did actually suffered Acute Renal Failure, recovered from it without any treatment and has now severely damaged kidneys? I did read that ARF without any treatment is fatal.
